Oxygen Epigenetics or O2 EPI; A re-branding of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for the 21st Century and beyond.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy has been a misunderstood therapy for over 300 years. As a wound care treatment that simply uses oxygen in a pressurized chamber it was clear that HBOT makes wounds heal faster, and that’s it. Many people have benefited from this fact, however it somehow wasn’t enough to gain the attention of the medical community. In fact it was given a bad name – like snake oil.

Welcome to our podcast series where it is our aim to discredit the dogma and bring awareness to the many uses of hyperbaric oxygen therapy. In this episode Dr. Paul Harch talks about the science that he and other Doctors of Emergency Medicine have come to discover after years of dedication to this practice, and the help of advances in technology.

It is here and now that Dr. Harch introduces the re-branding of hyperbaric oxygen therapy by showing us how the healing is attributed to gene therapy. Epigenetics is the study of changes in organisms caused by modification of gene expression rather than alteration of the genetic code itself. Under hyperbaric medical conditions it has been found that the healing takes place on the DNA level. “Hyperbaric oxygen through increases in pressure and oxygen are acting at the epigenetic level to express and suppress genes, therefore we should re-brand hyperbaric oxygen therapy for the 21st century as Oxygen Epigenetics or O2 Epi” PGH M.D.

In this episode Dr. Harch tells us that “hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a treatment for wounds in the body at any location and for any duration.” Doctor Harch talks exclusively about treating wounds in the brain. Treatment for traumatic brain injury is possible using hyperbaric oxygen therapy and Dr. Harch explains in scientific terms how this is done.

DEFINITION

The application of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) to chronic traumatic brain injury (TBI) can be traced to clinical practice and research in South Florida and New Orleans, Louisiana. It is well known that the practice of HBOT in chronic neurological conditions was pioneered by the late Dr. Richard Neubauer in the 1970s. As mentioned on a previous podcast, Dr. Neubauer began with a unexpected finding of neurological improvement in two multiple sclerosis patients who were being treated with HBOT for chronic bone infections, Dr. Neubauer began applying hyperbaric oxygen to patients with other neurological conditions, primarily stroke. In 1994, he published his first case of HBOT treatment of chronic TBI in the Southern Medical Journal.

What is hyperbaric oxygen therapy? Basically it’s a treatment for wounds in the body at any location and for any duration that uses 100% oxygen as the drug administered under pressure in what’s known as the hyperbaric oxygen chamber.

But what is really happening?

Dr. Harch reviews the traditional definition defined by hyperbaric oxygen doctors and explains the defined pressure setting of 1.4 ATA as too limited. For, in a 2008 study involving U.S. Soldiers suffering a traumatic brain injury and/or post traumatic stress Harch discovers that there is a wider spectrum concerning pressure. As the FDA instructs Dr. Harch to find out and prove what this treatment is, and the combinations of increased oxygen and increased pressure he realizes that HBOT used to stimulate new soft tissue growth and repair is actually connected to specific hormones in our DNA.

Dr. Harch explains the science of hyperbaric oxygen therapy that has recently been realized as gene therapy.
